League and Cup Double Winterton Rangers capped a superb season by clinching the Northern Counties East League title and the League Cup. On May 5th Rangers won the League Cup with a 3-1 win against Parkgate at Staveley's Inkersall Road Ground. In a very tight game Rangers took the lead through Andy Holt to hold a 1-0 half time lead. Blasting out at the start of the second half Winterton went further ahead again through Holt. Parkgate then put Rangers under sustained pressure and grabbed one back from a Gavin Allott penalty. Both sides missed great chances before Danny Clarke converted a penalty late on to take Rangers safely to the final whistle. Final Game Wintertons last game of the season at Thackley was a three quarter pace affair that had Rangers on top for most of the game. Dave Ricardo opened the scoring on 12mins. before Bob Northen grabbed a late goal that made him the leading scorer in the league and Rangers a 2-0 win. The only down side was the injury to Lee Mohammed who has possibly torn ankle ligaments, which will rule him out of a place in the Cup Final on Monday. Also Andy Holt and Phil Jackson were subbed as a precaution when the bobbling pitch looked to be a problem. Bizarrely, Rangers keeper Ben Simpson had to replace Mohammed in the side, up front and twice went close to scoring. Entrance Prices for the Cup Final have been set at £4 and £2 for Monday 5th May at Staveley. Winterton romp at Home Rangers final home game of the season saw Maltby visit West Street, only to leave on the end of a 6-1 defeat. But the big news from elsewhere was the loss of Glapwell at home to Maltby and Pickering drawing at Mickleover. It means Rangers need 6 points from the remaining 7 games. Semi-Final Hoodoo over Winterton finally feached a cup final. Afetr losing two others recently Rangers booked their place in the final of the League Cup with a penalties win against Hallam at West Street. After falling behind on 10mins when a free kick sneaked past a poorly set up wall, Rangers huffed and puffed but got back on terms on 37mins. The game ended 1-1 aet. To penalties and Rangers converted four (Northen, Clarke, Would Holt) to Hallams two (Sub Ben Simpson saved the first) and to a final against either Parkgate or Barton T. Bank Holiday fixtures Rangers travel to Liversedge on saturday before Hallam visit West street on Easter Monday in a 3pm kick off in the League Cup. Return to form Winterton bounced back from the lincs cup defeat with a 1-4 win at Mickleover Sports in a entertaining game which could have seen more goals either way in this open encounter. Goals from Northen, Watson (2) and Holt brought Rangers back from a goal down. Rangers bow out Winterton went out of the Lincs Senior A Cup with a 1-0 defeat at Blackstones in a poor game in Sth. Lincs. Rangers were unhappy with the standard of the officials but didn't make many chances either, so another semi-final defeat for Rangers. Three points at Home A wind affected game at West street saw Rangers edge past Sth. Normanton 1-0 with Rob Northen grabbing his 38th goal of the season. it stretched Winterton's unbeaten record to 19 games in the league. An interesting fact, Rangers havn't lost a league game at home since Nostell beat us on the 31st March 2007. and including that game have only lost one at home in 37 league games. not a bad record. (Match report to follow) A win at the Welfare A 3-0 win at Glasshoughton, looks on paper to be a comfortable result for Rangers against the bottom side, but in strong winds Rangers huffed and puffed for most of the game. Winterton went ahead from a contentious header from Matt Plant that took the ball from the hands of ex-Ranger Dane Whittleston giving our boys the impetous to finish the game strongly with Watson feeding Northen for a brace that made the result comfortable. Trio look to return Nigel Croad gained fitness to be available for the Game at his previous club Glasshoughton on Saturday. Judd Colley was given a work-out by Mark Brady prior to kick off and it was nice to see Dave Ricardo trotting around after his recent repetitive strain injury. League Cup Victory Winterton came away from Selby with a resounding win in the league cup quarter final 0-5 Goals from Northen, Catton, Plant and penalties from Clarke and Jackson scored in an impressive display from a team with four changes from saturday. Winterton go further ahead Winterton moved further ahead of nearest rivals Glapwell with a thumping 7-1 home win against Eccleshill Utd. Northen 4 Holt 2 & Dave Watson's 3rd in 4 games. Rangers form continues After an excellent 2-2 draw against Glapwell Rangers visted Parkgate and came away with a good 3-0 win to extend their lead at the top of the division as Glapwell's game was postponed. See match report. Out of the cup A Depleted Rangers went out of the Presidents cup at the semi-final stage with a 0-1 defeat. Winterton missed a string of chances before Liversedge garabbed a goal late on to fix a berth in the Final against Armthorpe. Good week for Rangers Its been a great week for Winterton Rangers, first Rangers beat local rivals Hall Road Rangers 5-1 in the League cup (Catton 2, Northen, Plant, Whitehouse) before travelling to Armthorpe and league action. Rangers played very well and came out 3-0 victors (Holt 2, Northen). With Glapwell drawing at home to Glasshoughton, Rangers moved 5 points clear at the top of the Premier. Lee Mohammed saw red soon after but an og and a Mark Whitehouse brace grabbed the points.Winterton Removed from the FA Vase Winterton Rangers travelled to London today for the FA Appeal hearing held at Soho Square. The FA charge that Winterton played Rob Northen in the FA Vase tie against Pickering Town on the eighth of December whilst suspended was upheld. Winterton Rangers were removed from the competition and Pickering Town were reinstated. The FA panel accepted WRFC had not deliberately attempted to breach any rule, and as such the FA Panel did not impose any Fine or cost of the hearing on WRFC. Dave Crowder, WRFC Chairman who led the delegation said… “Although we are disappointed with the outcome of today’s hearing, we accept the FA ruling. We apologise to the ‘team’ and supporters and thank them all for their support and understanding during what has been a difficult time for us all. ….An internal enquiry has taken place within the club, and lessons have been learned.” “We still have much to play for with our exciting young side still in all domestic cup competitions and flying high in the league and whilst this incident is prominent at the moment it does not take away the players outstanding performances in the NCEL Premier division this season. Winterton win at Hallam Rangers gave full league debut's to Jonathan Haigh, Nathan Would and Nigel Croad played his first game at Centre back. To be played on Saturday 19th January 2008. Wednesday cup tie off Wintertons Presidents Cup tie against Liversedge was called off after the the pitch was considered unplayable on Wednesday morning. Heavy rain during Saturdays Vase game made a mess of the pitch and the following frost has made it impossible to play on. Rangers draw at Glapwell Rangers visit to high fliers Glapwell ended in a draw against the ten-man Notts outfit. Glapwells keeper was shown a second yellow after bringing down Lee Mohammed in an awful challenge on the edge of the box that should have seen straight red. Glapwell took the lead with a sneaky corner that took Rangers unawares on 26mins. Ben Simpson made two good saves in the first half and Rangers missed a number of chances to draw level. Danny Clarke finally fired in from 20 yards in first half stoppage time. Winterton dominated the second half as Glapwell drew narrow and gave away a string of fouls the referee seemed unable to identify. Simpson was again very sharp to produce two great saves as Glapwell broke clear. Winterton didn't really make the most of their man advantage but had a clear hand ball turned away by a poor referee. 1-1 Andy Catton leaves West Street The Rangers favourite has left West Street for pastures new this week, joining Unibond side Ossett Albion. Although disappointed with his decision, all at Winterton wish him the very best. Five past Shirebrook Rangers good form continued with a convincing 5-0 home victory against Shirebrook. See match report. Winterton win into the County Cup Semi's Rangers made the short trip to Barton without skipper Steve Robinson, Rob Northen and Andy Holt. Bartons Gary Dickinson was sent off after 15mins leaving the Old boys to play with 10-men for the rest of the game. Danny Clarke put Rangers into the lead only to be pegged back by a Craig Burdick goal. Extra time saw Dave Ricardo give Rangers the lead only for a defensive error gift Barton an equaliser. Lee Mohammed grabbed a brace in the last period of extra time to give Rangers a semi-final berth. Rangers stay unbeaten at home Winterton entertained Nostell for the second time in a fortnight at West street last night coming out 3-0 victors. Starting without both Andy Holt and Rob Northen Rangers raced into a 3-0 lead within 14 minutes. Danny Clarke (9) Steve Underwood(11) and Lee Mohammed(14). Winterton play Brodsworth at home on Saturday. Vase win at Bootle Rangers won through to the next round of the FA Vase in a rip-roaring cup tie at Bootle. An indifferent first half going in 1-0 down was turnd round to 3-1 with goals from Northen, Holt and Whitehouse looked to have sealed it for Winterton before Bootle striker Andy Fowler grabbed a brace including the equaliser in stoppage time. Lincs Senior A Cup win Rangers btravelled the short distance to Lincoln Moorlands, well most of them did, at kick-off time Rangers only had 8 players as 4 players were stuck in traffic. when two appeared the game started with Rangers fielding only 10 players. And bossed the game taking the lead through Rob Northen on 22mins. Winterton were at full strength when Northen made it 0-2 with a superb individual goal. Into the second halfand a atrong Danny Clarke run and back heel allowed Andy Catton to fire home from the edge 59mins, and Clarke playing up front finished the scoring ten minutes later with a clinical finish off the inside of the post. 4-0 The next round see's Rangers visit Barton Town OB. FA Vase Draw Rangers have been drawn away against Bootle (Liverpool) on Saturday 17th November. Bootle play in the North West Counties League 2nd Division and beat AFC Emley 2-0 in the previous round. Northen nicks it Winterton went through to the 2nd round of the FA Vase with a last gasp penalty from Rob Northen against Northern league side Thornaby. Rangers Bash the Bishops Winterton's third visit to the North-East in the FA vase saw Rangers defeat Bishop Auckland 2-4 in an entertaining game full of mistakes and goals. The blues fell behind after 5minutes but were 3 up after 20, as Andy Holt produced his best performance of the season, and grabbed a brace. Meanwhile Lincoln Moorlands drew at Ely so our Lincs county cup game on Tuesday is now postponed. Winterton to host Hull City Reserves Rangers are delighted to announce an agreement has been made with Championship side Hull City to host six evening matches for the Tigers reserve side up to Christmas. Rangers Bow out of the FA Cup Rangers second visit to the North East saw rangers go down 3-2. In a poor performance Rangers only really turned up in a twenty minute spell in the second half when already 3-1 down. It was Pete Daniel's teams first defeat of the season and very disappointing. Rangers make it eight straight Rangers won their eighth consecutive game, with a 3-0 defeat of Armthorpe. Armthorpe had long spells of posession but created very few openings. Rangers scored early on through Lee Mohammed (7) and then came strong in the last quarter. Rob Northen (52) grabbed his 7th of the season even though he had recieved a head injury moments before and was subbed soon after. Danny Clarke completed the scoring on 88 minutes with a penalty. Rangers busy start continues Rangers entertain Armthorpe MW on Wednesday, 7.45 k/o back in the league before travelling to the North-East for another two consecutive Saturadys in the FA Cup and Vase to play West Auckland and Bishop Auckland respectively. Northen strikes Ryton time. Rob Northen struck a second half hat-trick for Rangers in the FA Vase trip to Ryton to book a place in the second round. Alf Smith Awarded Winterton's Treasurer and Groundsman Alf Smith and his assistants, Jeg Sewell and Dave Crowder were invited to the National Groundsman of the Year Awards for 2007 held this week at Windsor Racecourse. At the champaign luncheon recieved a plaque and rated highly commendable as one of eight clubs at our level (steps 5 & 6) from throughout the country.
Rangers cross another Bridge Winterton's great start to the season continued with another home win. Rangers entertained Worsbrough Bridge in the Presidents Cup and came out 3-1 victors with goals from Lee Mohammed and Steve Underwood and an own goal. Rangers now look to the weekend for the trip to Ryton in the FA Vase. Winterton Win again Rangers went through to the first round of the FA cup with a 1-0 win against Morpeth Town. But it wasn't plain sailing, Morpeth saw plenty of posession but lacked the killer touch in front of goal. Rangers had their chances too and Andy Catton finally took one on 50mins. to ease past their Northern league opposition. Rangers will have to visit either Wakefield or West Aukland who drew. FA Cup day Rangers entertain Morpeth Town on saturday in the preliminary round of the FA cup. The winners will take a trip to either Wakefield or West Aukland in the next round. Pete Daniel is hoping to welcome back Craig Sharpless and James Atkinson from injury. Rangers run continues Winterton won their first away day of the season at fancied Selby Town with a Lee Mohammed strike late in the second half to steal the points. Selby dominated but Rangers keeper Ben Simpson made three great saves. Rangers injury list is growing is the only down side. Atkinson, Whitehouse, Sharpless were unvailable tonight. Bank Holiday Rangers holiday weekend starts with the visit of Mickleover Sports on Saturday, for what is epected to be a tought encounter against a side that finished 7th in the prem last term. Bank Holiday monday see's Winterton on their travels for the first time this season with the short trip to Selby Town and another top ten side last year (5th) FA Cup win against Armthorpe Welfare Rangers go into the next round after beating Armthorpe at West Street 3-2 (see match report) Now Rangers will face Morpeth at home in a fortnight. Unfortunately, Rangers favourite Mark Whitehouse fractured his cheekbone in a collision with Ben Simpson and was taken to hospital during the game. He is expected to be out for six weeks. Win against old rivals Rangers beat a Parkgate side including Steve Ward. Dave Ricardo grabbed a brace and Rob Northen opened his account for the season. Opening Day Draw at Home Rangers were held to a goalless draw at home (11/8/07) against fancied Pickering Town, Rangers edged posession in a keenly fought tie and felt there was a clear penalty decision turned down by the referee, at the other end Ben Simpson made a superb Banks-like save just past the half hour to keep the visitors at bay.
