Winterton Rangers slender chances of promotion are almost over as they fell to a 2-0 defeat away at now second place Hallam who have the NCEL Division One title in their hands.
Tom Roebuck put Hallam in front just before the break against the run of play and then Ryan Carroll settled the tie 11 minutes from time. The match on reflection seemed to benefit both sides who played up the famous Hallam hill as Rangers dominated the first half however fell to a real sucker punch right before the half time break.
Rangers boss Scott Hellewell was subdued afterwards, “I feel gutted, we got ourselves back into contention with a few good 1-0 wins then we play like that at Hallam. First half we was best team up the hill, all they wanted to do was bosh it forward and we dealt with it well. But the sucker punch came in the last minute of the half when they scored from a corner.
“Still we went in at half time quietly confident as we had to go down the hill but that performance second half was the worst I have seen all season. We resorted to smashing balls forward bypassing the midfield which played into there hands.
“There centre backs won everything in the air, there lads in the middle won every second ball and there strikers didn’t stop running. The difference in half’s was staggering, the league title has gone now but we want to finish as high as possible which is top 4 which should guarantee an FA Cup spot.
“Saturday needs to hurry up so we can go out there and prove a point. Credit to Hallam you can see how they are up there as there a big physical outfit and certainly can play there pitch.”
