Following the final game of the season we caught up with Winterton Rangers Manager Scott Hellewell to discuss his thoughts and feelings on the 2018/19 campaign.
Scott begins with outlining his season highlight “It has to be the whole season really, there have been some highs and lows but a very enjoyable season and hopefully next season will be even better. I think the best moment of the season has to be Liam Nelthorpe scoring the winning free kick in the FA Vase against one of the favorites. There are other good moments like the Campion win at home or the convincing wins against Worsborough. But the one what stands out is the FA Vase game against Dunston.”
Of course with the good, comes the bad times “There are a few bad moments in the season and a few that stand out are the Irlam defeat in the FA vase along with the last minute goals conceded against Selby and Emley, the loss at home against Armthorpe and most recently the defeat to Hallam where we played terrible but I think the Emley defeat was probably the worst as it meant we was playing catch up to the top teams and pretty much ruined the good work we had done to get in contention.”
Who has stood out for you in the squad this season? “There are a few influential players in the team even though we are a young side, Kez is our captain but there are other leaders in the changing room. Nelly is vocal and I think lads look up to him with his experience, Joel was the captain and sets examples when he is playing with his work rate and Chaz just brings a calming influence to the whole team especially on the pitch.”
Was your expectations met? “I think the team this season has matched expectations maybe even gone above them. We did well in The FA Vase and a top 4 finish in our first season challenging near the top is a good start it’s just a shame they have got rid of the play offs and made it extremely hard to get out the league this season.
What have you learnt since taking over? “The things I have learnt this season are that in this league any team can beat anyone, there are some very good teams at this level and it’s only going to get stronger.”
Your thoughts ahead of 2019/20 season? “Plans for next season are to top this season which I hope will mean winning the league as that’s what we all strive for then another good run in the FA Vase and some FA Cup football where anything can happen. I want to win every game we play in whether it’s league, cup or friendlies and we will be setting out to do that.”
Thoughts on the squad depth? “I’m very happy with the squad we have so priority is to keep everyone at the club, we have some very good players who will attract interest from clubs higher up but we have a great mix and a great changing room so I hope they all return. On top of that we want to improve the squad obviously so we will be working hard to bring a few in over the summer to add competition for places.”
Final words… “I just want to say thank you to everyone who has come to watch us this season and I hope you all come back next year to help us in what we want to achieve as your support is vital for a club like ours, I can’t wait for pre season already. See you all next season.
UP THE RANGERS!!!
